§ 7-6-16. Impounding of animals running at large procedure.

  • A.

    In the event that any dog or cat seized for running at large wears a collar or harness having inscribed thereon and attached thereto the name and address of any person, or a tag identifying the owner or person keeping or harboring said cat or dog or any other animal, the police department shall forthwith serve on the person a citation. Any animal that has been seized will be liable to be disposed of if not claimed within seven days after apprehension.

    B.

    Any animal seized running at large whose owner is not identifiable shall be impounded for a period of at least five days. Thereafter, such animals shall be either given to the Anti-Cruelty Society for adoption, humanely euthanized or otherwise disposed of in accordance with the Illinois Compiled Statutes.
